The boys have been talking about Granita non-stop since we first started planning this trip. Granita is a Sicilian thing - sure... Starbucks tries to do something similar with it's frappucino... and water ice is *sort of* the same concept.... but not in anyway as good. We conferred with Cici last night about where to find the best granita in Riposto. Sure enough - it's right near his apartment (just like the best pizza place is right next to his apartment.) I suppose this makes sense since he lives right in the true heart of Riposto - behind the duomo, a block from the ocean, 2 blocks from the pescheria and fruit/vegetable vendors... So we walked the 1km to this granita place. Yum.
The boys all ordered ciocolato and I ordered pistacchio.
The following is a closeup of the pistacchio granita scooped onto the brioche - which is the proper way to eat granita.
You can see that it is thick, has chunks of flavorful ice, and is loaded with flavor.
Next we went shopping - buying fruit, prosciutto, fresh rolls, formaggio, and these lovely peaches and nectarines. We'll make a snack with this for an early dinner after our siesta/naps.... to tide us over till dinner tonight at 9pm. Apparently half of Riposto will be at this dinner - all cugini of my husband.
Here are some pics walking back from our Granita and shopping trip. Note the pavers are made with blocks of lava... Something there is a lot of here at the base of Mt. Etna.
The granita looks yummie.
ReplyDeleteThe boys were talking about the Granita as soon as we got off the plane. We've been limiting it to one granita e brioche per day... much to their dismay. Same with gelato - no more than one per day.
ReplyDeleteThey'd live on it if they could.
I'm with the boys on this--pretty sure I would want to live on granite and/or gelato! You obviously are having a great time!!
